Hydrological Responses to Land Use Land Cover Changes in the Fincha’a Watershed, Ethiopia

چکیده

Land use land cover (LULC) changes are highly pronounced in African countries, as they characterized by an agriculture-based economy and a rapidly growing population. Understanding how use/cover (LULCC) influence watershed hydrology will enable local governments policymakers to formulate implement effective appropriate response strategies minimize the undesirable effects of future change or modification sustain socio-economic situation. The hydrological Ethiopia Fincha’a LULCC that happened during 25 years was investigated, comparing situation three reference years: 1994, 2004, 2018. information derived from Landsat sensors, respectively 5 TM, 7 ETM, 8 OLI/TIRS. various LULC classes were via ArcGIS using supervised classification system, accuracy assessment done confusion matrixes. For all overall accuracies kappa coefficients higher than 80%, with 2018 more accurate year. analysis revealed forest decreased 20.0% between 1994–2004, it 11.8% following period 2004–2018. Such decline areas covered is correlated expansion cultivated 16.4% 10.81%, respectively. After having evaluated at basin scale, divided into 18 sub-watersheds, which contained 176 hydrologic units (HRUs), specific LULC. Accounting for such detailed subdivision watershed, SWAT model firstly calibrated validated on past data, then applied infer each HRU LULCC. modelling results pointed out general increase average water flow, both dry wet periods, consequence shift coverage grass towards settlements build-up areas. present need accounting responses rivers scale.

Hydrological Responses to Land Use/Cover Changes in the Olifants Basin, South Africa

This paper discusses the hydrological impacts of land use changes on the Olifants Basin in South Africa using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). A three-phase land use scenario (2000, 2007 and 2013) employing the “fix-changing” method was used to simulate the hydrology of the Olifants Basin. Changes in land uses were related to different hydrological responses through a multi-regression...

Hydrological responses of a watershed to historical land use evolution and future land use scenarios under climate change conditions

Watershed runoff is closely related to land use but this influence is difficult to quantify. This study focused on the Chaudière River watershed (Québec, Canada) and had two objectives: (i) to quantify the influence of historical agricultural land use evolution on watershed runoff; and (ii) to assess the effect of future land use evolution scenarios under climate change conditions (CC). To achi...

Global Climate Responses to Land Use and Land Cover Changes Over the Past Two Millennia

A reconstructed land use/land cover change (LUCC) dataset was used with the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to conduct a climate sensitivity analysis over the past two millennia. Compared to a controlled experiment conducted with the CESM, the LUCC showed significant biogeophysical effects on global climate on multi-decadal to centennial time scales. The global annual mean temperature and p...

Evaluation of land use/land cover changes in Mekelle City, Ethiopia using Remote Sensing and GIS

Land use is a dynamic phenomenon that changes with time and space due to anthropogenic pressure and development. Evaluating the existing land use and its periodic change is useful for urban planners, policy makers and natural resource managers. Land use and land cover changes in Mekelle City, Ethiopia (north east Africa) over a period of 25 years was studied using remotely sensed data. Multi te...

Watershed conservation prioritization using geomorphometric and land use-land cover parameters

Geomorphometric features and land use/land cover are essential in the context of watershed prioritization for resources conservation and protection. Watersheds in tropical regions like the Philippines are under threat of degradation due to the combined effects of uncontrolled agricultural activities in the uplands and frequently increasing erosive precipitations brought about by climate change....
